Heading home one night I decided to stop by a grocery store to pick up a few groceries. Upon entering the store, I crossed paths with a gentleman shopping, looking at a colorful display of a child window decorating kit. He commented how interesting the display was and I commented on what a good Christmas gift it would be for a child. I asked him what kind of work he did and he started talking about his truck driving experience as he drove for a large chain and delivered groceries to the stores. I continued to ask about his work, and what he had seen on his trips and listened as he described various experiences. As we discussed the increased traffic on the roads he mentioned he had seen many wrecks and unfortunately some deaths due to accidents. I asked what he thought happens when people die. He replied that hopefully, people go to heaven. I asked what would be the criteria for going to heaven. He responded by being a good person. I then replied that being a good person is a great goal but God never says how good we have to be in the bible. We talked about how we were all guilty of sin and none of us were good enough to enter heaven on our good works. I then shared the gospel, how Jesus was the only one who could solve the problem of our sins as He paid for our sins by His death on the cross. He was buried and rose again to show He was indeed the Son of God who had the power to defeat death. It was a great conversation as he confirmed he had trusted Christ as His Savior when he was younger. I encouraged him to develop his relationship with the Lord and share the love of God with others.

Asking questions about what interests others, such as their job and experiences, is a great way to start and continue a conversation. A good question to ask that leads to discussing the gospel is, ‘What do you think happens to people when they die?’ Their answer gives you a clue as to what they believe about the afterlife which can lead to sharing the gospel.
