After parking and heading in to a grocery store, I stopped to collect a gentleman’s grocery cart as he finished unloading his groceries. I noticed he had a knee brace on and asked about his injury. He began to share about his knee surgery and how it unfortunately was not healing well. I asked if I could pray for healing and he gladly accepted the prayer. After finishing I asked him if he believed in an afterlife. He said he did yet responded with how to get there was through good works. I shared about how no amount of good works can earn us a way to heaven since none of us are perfect. God’s standard of goodness is moral perfection. Even Jesus answered the rich young ruler with “why do you call me good, no one is good but God alone” ( Luke 18:19). I then shared what God did for guilty sinners like us. He sent Jesus to die and pay the penalty for our sin. All He ask of us is to repent and put our trust in Him, not our good efforts. He acknowledged what I said and we parted ways, being grateful for the prayers. This encounter reminded me that if we keep our eyes open, have a predetermined mindset that if there is an opportunity to pray or speak to someone, then I will engage. God will always open the door for the gospel to be shared.
